THAIKHUN BATH
Last month, I got to visit a Thai restaurant in Bath that quickly became my favourite. It’s one of these restaurants, where you visit once and just can’t wait to go visit again.
I visited Thaikhun with my sister Natalia (who is also a writer on the blog), and ever since we visited the restaurant we have been talking about how amazing the experience was. Seriously, great food, wonderful atmosphere, outstanding service and great value for money.
I visited Thailand in 2015, and that was when I first fell in love with Thai cuisine. I went to Bangkok and Pattaya, and as I’m such a foodie I had to try so many different dishes while I was there. Coconut curries are actually my favourite, and Thaikhun restaurant is really good at these. The restaurant first opened in 2014 in Manchester by a Thai lady and her British husband. We were told by the restaurant manager that almost all items that were used to decorate the restaurant were actually from Thailand, and so were many of the ingredients used in cooking the dishes that were served at the restaurant. We were greeted by the restaurant manager when we first arrived, who gave us a lot of information about Thaikhun and definitely made our visit pleasant.
THAIKHUN
If you were wondering about the restaurant’s name, “Thaikhun” is pronounced as Tycoon and it means “your” Thai restaurant.
When we first arrived, we ordered some prawn crackers to nibble on (Khao Greab Goong). They came with sweet chilli sauce that was just perfect to dip the crackers in. Followed by sweetcorn cakes (Tod Man Khao Pd), that were deep fried and flavoured with red curry paste, aromatic kaffir lime leaves, and served with sweet chilli dip. We both really liked this starter, it’s vegetarian and very tasty.
The other starter that we ordered was the vegetarian spring rolls, they tasted very fresh and I really liked this one. However, my sister said that these weren’t her favourite. If you’re looking for a vegetarian option, and really love your veg then I would recommend this one to you.
For drinks, I had the Full Moon (in the picture below), which is basically vodka, orange liqueur with watermelon, apple, cranberry & midori. It was really tasty and refreshing, served with crushed ice and the presentation was impressive. My sister had the big 5 smoothie, non-alcoholic, fruity and tasty.
We also got a Papaya salad, which came with shredded fresh papaya, toasted peanuts, lime, tomato, dried shrimp and LOTS of chilli. This salad is extremely hot, we could not eat it as we couldn’t handle the heat, but order this if you dare! Apparently, it’s a Thai classic, and a must try in the Thai cuisine.
THAIKHUN MENU
For main course, we ordered Thai Red Curry (Geang Phed), it’s a red curry with cherry tomato, pineapple, grapes, and sweet basil. All curries are served with jasmine rice, and we got this one with chicken (you can get it with either prawn, duck, beef, chicken or tofu). This dish was my absolute favourite and the reason why I want to visit Thaikhun again. We also got Grilled Sea bass (Pla Pao), sea bass fillet marinated in oyster sauce, lemongrass, galangal and lime leaves. It’s wrapped in a banana leaf, and grilled over charcoal. As this was wrapped in a banana leaf, the fish was really moist and delicious, it also came with salad and jasmine rice on the side.
For dessert, we went for Banana fritters with vanilla pod ice cream, these were light and extremely delicious! And Mango sticky rice served with Thai fresh mangoes. A lovely Thai classic, but the banana fritters were our favourite.
This restaurant is perfect for date nights, friends gatherings, work get-togethers, family dinners or even birthdays! The atmosphere is lively but relaxed at the same time, so it’s perfect for any occasion.
